Radio NRW: Best Practice for AI Adoption
Why workshops are the key to AI success
Some milestones are simply worth celebrating. At the start of March, it happened: all 46 local radio stations in North Rhine-Westphalia are now using the Radio Creator AI Tools. Together with Radio NRW - the programme provider for the NRW local radio system - dozens of stations joined in one go.
The result: more than 70 radio stations in Germany and Austria are now working with the AI Tools - from daily research and audio production through to automated workflows in editorial, marketing and sales.
But what makes this launch truly special? Not the number of stations. It's the way Radio NRW approached the rollout.
Tools alone are not enough - you need people who know how to use them
Anyone who has ever been involved in a software rollout at a media company knows the problem: the tool is there, the logins are set up, the licence is running - and yet hardly anyone actually uses it. Because nobody knows where to start. Because the daily routine leaves no time. Because the first attempts don't work straight away.
AI tools are no exception. Quite the opposite: if you've never worked with a language model before, you're staring at an empty input field wondering: what am I actually supposed to type here?
That's exactly why Radio NRW's approach is so exemplary. Rather than simply activating the tools and hoping for self-initiative, Radio NRW organised two large workshops right from the start - two Teams meetings with more than 80 participants each. The interest was enormous. There were plenty of questions, plenty of concrete scenarios and plenty of examples drawn directly from real radio practice.
What makes a good AI workshop
A workshop only works if it stays concrete. "AI can do a lot" - everyone knows that by now. What teams really need are specific answers to specific questions: How do I research a story faster? How do I produce an ad spot when a client calls at short notice? How do I turn a press release into three social media posts in under a minute?
Particularly valuable was the hands-on perspective from teams already using the tools in their daily work. Barbara Kawa and Alina Mielemeier from AMS (Audio Media Service) have been using the AI Tools for some time and were able to share many concrete examples from their day-to-day work in editorial and sales.
What became very tangible in the process: AI workflows that are tailored to the real requirements of a team deliver results immediately. Generic prompts copied from somewhere on the internet usually don't.
What the AI Tools deliver in everyday radio work
The Radio Creator AI Tools are a web application developed specifically for use in media companies. Four modules cover the most important tasks:
Faster research: With specialised search tools - Google AI Search, Perplexity, GPT Search, Anthropic Search - and direct access to the DPA archive, facts, background information and story ideas can be found significantly faster than with traditional research methods. The search tools can also be combined for in-depth investigations.
Relieving the editorial team: Transcribing audio, summarising content, revising texts, creating multiple content formats from a single source - the Assistants module, with helpers like Finn Facts Finder, Eddie Editor or Sammy Social, takes over recurring tasks that would otherwise eat up a lot of time.
Simplifying social media and online production: Posts for Instagram, Facebook, X and WhatsApp in the right tone for each channel, plus AI-generated images with FLUX, GPT Image or Gemini - all in the right format, ready to publish.
Supporting audio production: Ad spots, podcasts, weather reports, news bulletins and other audio content can be produced with over 200 AI voices, a music bed and a finished mix. The AI Spot Producer guides you through the entire process in a dialogue - from target audience briefing to the broadcast-ready audio file.
Automating workflows: Recurring processes in editorial, marketing and sales can be set up as AI workflows and run again and again - on a schedule and fully automated if needed.
AI that grows from practice
What sets the Radio Creator AI Tools apart from generic AI platforms: they weren't developed on a drawing board, but built in live operation alongside real radio stations. Many of the functions and features in the product today came directly from ideas that emerged in the day-to-day work of customers.
That's exactly why the exchange with radio partners like Radio NRW is so valuable. When 80 journalists, editors, sales staff and producers bring their questions and scenarios to a workshop, the result is a stream of impulses that make the product better - for everyone.
This is also why the AI Tools come with such specific capabilities: direct access to the DPA archive, weather data from the German Weather Service, web radio statistics, Matomo analytics, an Audio Enhancer for interviews recorded in noisy environments, and a Voice Changer for creative voice production. These are not features you find in a general-purpose AI tool. These are solutions to real radio problems.
70 stations, a growing community
More than 70 radio stations in Germany and Austria are using the AI Tools in active production today - including major brands such as HIT RADIO FFH, radio ffn, Antenne Niedersachsen, Antenne Thüringen, Antenne Steiermark and many more. And now all 46 local radio stations in NRW.
What's taking shape is more than a customer list. It's a community of radio teams collectively discovering what AI can genuinely deliver in everyday media work. Teams that share their experiences. That develop workflows that help others. That demonstrate, day by day, that AI in radio is not a topic for the future - it's happening right now.
The most important step: getting started
If you're thinking about how to introduce AI at your station or media company, Radio NRW's experience is a great model to follow: don't wait until everything is perfect. Don't hope that adoption will happen by itself. Actively bring your teams along, show them real use cases and find out together what actually works in your daily routine.
The Radio Creator AI Tools are ready to use immediately - with pre-built assistants from the marketplace, a comprehensive prompt library, video tutorials and a detailed online manual. You can request a free demo access directly at radio-creator.com/en/ai-tools.html.
Welcome on board, NRW. We're looking forward to working together.
